
RIDOT DESIGN BUILD RT 6-10 INTERCHANGE PROJECT
Project Overview
The Route 6/10 Interchange reconstruction project serves approximately 100,000 vehicles per day and involved the design-build delivery of new highway bridges to replace existing structures that were in a state of disrepair and deemed structurally deficient.
As a subcontractor to the 6/10 Joint Venture (JV), Aetna Bridge installed approximately 4,500 tons of structural steel using its own AISC-certified ironworkers. Aetna Bridge was also contracted to perform preservation repairs to the existing interchange, including concrete repairs, structural steel repairs, and shoring operations.
AECOM was responsible for project management, quality control, SharePoint administration, bridge design, subsurface investigations, foundation design, highway design, traffic analysis, traffic control design, drainage design, permitting, lighting design, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), landscape architecture, public outreach support, shared-use path design, and utility coordination. The design effort utilized accelerated collaboration methods to meet project goals and schedule requirements.
The project presented numerous design and construction challenges. One of the most significant challenges involved designing the new roadway and bridge infrastructure within a footprint similar to the existing interchange while maintaining traffic flow throughout the entire construction period. This was successfully achieved through multiple iterations of roadway geometry, resulting in a final design that was both operationally efficient and constructible within the proposed phased construction sequence.
Another major challenge involved extensive railroad coordination, as six new bridges were required over the Amtrak corridor. The project team engaged with Amtrak early and throughout the design process to develop and gain approval for design concepts. As an approved Amtrak OCS designer, AECOM leveraged its extensive experience and proven understanding of railroad requirements to successfully navigate the complexities of rail-related design and construction coordination.
