The Washington Bridge was a 1,900-foot-long prestressed and post-tensioned concrete bridge carrying I-195 over the Seekonk River between Providence and East Providence, Rhode Island. The bridge served more than 96,000 vehicles per day and represented one of the busiest sections of interstate highway in the state.

The Washington Bridge North Design-Build (D/B) project was undertaken by a joint venture between Aetna Bridge Company and Barletta Heavy Division. The planned improvements included:

1. Structural repairs and strengthening of the Washington Bridge, including the construction of link slabs.
2. Construction of a new bridge structure in East Providence to carry traffic from the Taunton Avenue, Warren Avenue, and Veterans Memorial Parkway on-ramps.
3. Construction of a new bridge structure to carry traffic from Gano Street in Providence onto I-195 westbound.
4. Partial widening of the Washington Bridge to provide five continuous westbound lanes of traffic across the bridge.

As part of the widening effort, JR Vinagro performed demolition work to facilitate the bridge expansion.

The project was originally scheduled for completion in the summer of 2026. However, significant structural deficiencies were discovered during construction, resulting in the cancellation of the project in early 2024. Consequently, only a portion of the planned work was completed.
