RIDOT DESIGN BUILD WOOD RIVER BRIDGE

Project Overview

The Louisquisset Pike Bridge, which carries Route 146 over Route 116, was originally constructed in 1942 and had reached the end of its service life. The bridge was rated as structurally deficient, with significant load-carrying elements in poor condition. Additionally, the existing ramp configurations between Routes 146 and 116 presented safety concerns and did not meet current AASHTO design standards.

VHB and Aetna Bridge partnered as a Design-Build (D/B) team to reconstruct the bridge with new two-span steel girder bridge replacements. The project delivered a safer interchange by replacing the substandard back-to-back southbound Route 146 ramps with a new signalized interchange. The redesigned configuration reduced the bridge footprint, lowering future maintenance costs for RIDOT.

Aetna Bridge designed the bridge piers to avoid the relocation of existing underground utilities and implemented Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods. The new bridge was supported on mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall-supported stub abutments, helping to expedite the construction schedule.

Phase 1 involved the construction of a temporary crossover ramp for Route 146 northbound traffic, allowing traffic to be maintained during bridge construction activities. Phase 2 included the demolition of the existing Route 146 southbound bridge and construction of the replacement structure. JR Vinagro performed the phased demolition of the bridge structures in both directions.

Additional project improvements included new traffic signals, wrong-way driving safety measures, and stormwater treatment units.
