RIDOT EMERGENCY REPLACEMENT OF I-95 BRIDGE OVER WELLINGTON AVE
Project Overview
The Wellington Avenue Bridge carries significant commuter traffic to and from Providence along I-95 Northbound and Southbound. Due to the deteriorated condition of the bridge superstructure and resulting stability concerns, RIDOT determined that an emergency accelerated replacement was necessary.
With only three weeks between the Notice to Proceed and the first scheduled weekend closure, Aetna Bridge expedited planning and mobilization efforts to begin work after just two weeks. The scope of work included demolition of the existing bridge superstructure, installation of RIDOT-owned prefabricated bridge units (PBUs) and bridge bearings, PBU closure pours, waterproofing, paving, striping, and comprehensive traffic control operations.
RIDOT required the work to be completed over four weekends, utilizing multiple crews working around the clock. Close coordination and collaboration between Aetna Bridge and RIDOT were critical to the project's success.
Despite challenging weather conditions and various construction obstacles, the project was completed one week ahead of schedule. In addition, each weekend work phase was completed approximately 12 hours ahead of the allotted schedule, demonstrating the team's efficiency, planning, and execution capabilities.
